In a mix of saving a buck and getting a model [the Skylark - and now the Lancer]
into the air quickly, I'm using flight packs made from GE/Sanyo rechargeable 9V batteries. 
Inside this plastic case you will find 6 - 120 mah nicad cells. These batteries are selling for about $9.95 at Fry's Electronics in Phoenix, AZ. At about $1.65 per cell, the cost is quite reasonable - 120 mah cells are selling for $2-$3.50 each elsewhere.
The case can be opened by sawing around the edge of the top with a razor saw. Inside, the cells are connected by welded straps. Here's an 8 cell flight pack.
Three 9V batteries provide 18 cells - you can make two 8 cell flight batteries, with 2 cells left over. Four 9V batteries contain 24 cells, from which you can make three 8 cell flight batteries.
