CARLO GODEL MEMORIAL FREE FLIGHT ROCKET POWER MODEL AIRPLANE EVENT RULES

For the Rapier L-1 motor / R-20 event; Southwest Regionals, Eloy, Arizona, January 20, 2008

 1.  General.  An R-20 Outdoor Rocket Powered Free Flight model shall be propelled by a single (1) reaction motor of the Rapier L-1 type, with a wingspan and fuselage length not exceeding 20”. Maximum unloaded weight (i.e.: minus a live motor) shall not exceed 20 grams. All models shall be of the fixed wing type (no unfolding, deploying and/or rotating wing panels.) Beyond this, all fixed wing formats (delta, tail-less, canard, etc) are permitted. All standard Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) Free Flight Contest Rules shall be applicable unless specified below.

2.   Contestants. The contest is open to all who pay a registration fee of $10 US (or the equivalent in non-US currency.) Contestants may either attend the Southwest Regionals in person to fly their model or mail their model in advance to have it flown by a proxy flier. All contestants who will be flying their model in person at the Eloy field - and proxy fliers, who will be flying mailed entries - shall be Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) members in good standing. AMA membership is not required for contestants who will mailing in their entries.

2.1.  The registration fee for this particular event is in addition to annual AMA membership dues and all other registration fees that may be imposed upon 2008 Southwest Regionals contestants for other events. Contestants who are mailing their models must include payment and a registration form with their model. Contestants who will be attending the 2008 Southwest Regionals to fly their model in person may pay and register upon arrival.

3.  Flight Day.  The scheduled flight day for this event is Sunday, January 20, 2008.

If weather forecasts appear to be unsuitable for good flying, Event Organizers (Benjamin Nead and Rick Carnrick) shall consult with the Contest Director (Al Lidberg) to move the flying activities to another day during the 2008 Southwest Regionals (Friday, January 18, 2008 through Monday, January 21, 2008.)

4.  Categories.  The following categories have been established for this year’s contest:

Rapier L-1 motor / R-20:

One (1) flight = Two (2) minutes

Three (3) flights = Six (6) minutes

4.1.  A qualified fourth flight may be flown by the contestant or proxy flier who’s model obtains maximum flight times for all flights in the category flown. No maximum time limit is imposed on the fourth flight.

5.  Power Unit Types.  Rocket-powered Free Flight  models are fitted with one (1) rocket engine of the  Rapier L-1 type. All motors shall be provided by the Event Organizers and, for flight-to-flight consistency, sourced from a single production batch provided by a single vendor. **  No user-provided motors are permitted for this contest.

6.  Power Unit Modifications.  The Rapier L-1 motors cannot be modified or altered in any way to produce more power or endurance than is provided for in the manufacturer’s standard operating instructions.  Event Organizers and/or proxy fliers will inspect all motors to ensure accurate nozzle alignment.

7. Power Unit Mounting.  For safety, all Rapier L-1 motors shall be inserted into a paper and/or cardboard motor mounting tube which will be securely attached to the model. Additionally, a wire retaining clip shall be affixed to the paper/cardboard tube to prevent the motor from slipping out while in flight, effectively preventing the power unit from separating from the model. Violation of this regulation shall  be cause for disqualification from the event.

8.  Power Unit Ignition.  For safety, all Rapier L-1 motors shall be ignited by an electronic igniting wand. Fuses and any ignition methods that involves open flame shall  not be permitted.

9.  Violations.  The Contest Director (CD) may call for a spot check immediately before or after an official flight to determine if the motor is legal and if the model meets the contest rules safety criteria. If it is not in accordance with these rules, that flight will be voided and lost. Any motor/model considered dangerous by the CD may be impounded by the CD until the close of the contest.

10.  Launching.  Hand launching shall be as specified for all flights. No catapult assisted launching is permitted.

11.  Official Flight.  An official flight occurs when the model remains in the air for 40 seconds or more. Flights of less than 40 seconds may be declared official at the option of contestant or proxy flyer. The contestant’s or proxy flyer’s decision is to be made immediately and cannot be reversed later.

12.  Unofficial Flight.  An unofficial flight occurs when the flight is of less than 40 seconds duration if the contestant’s option described in the preceding paragraph is not exercised.  When the model collides with another model after timing begins, the contestant or proxy flier shall have the option of declaring the flight to be unofficial.

The contestant’s or proxy flier’s decision is to be made immediately and cannot be reversed later. The time of unofficial flights is not recorded. Flights during which parts are dropped are automatically unofficial, as are flights during the official portion of which the  model is aided by the flier or by artificial means.

13.  Number of Flights.  Each contestant shall be allowed a total of six (6) attempts to make three (3) official flights. If the contestant’s three (3) official flights total the maximum in the category flown, the contestant shall be allowed one (1) attempt to make a fourth  official flight of unlimited duration. All official and unofficial flights, as described above, are attempts.

14.  Scoring of Flights.  Scoring time shall be the total elapsed time of the three (3) official flights plus a  qualified fourth flight. If a contestant’s flight time exceeds the official limits of the category flown, the contestant’s time is to be recorded as the maximum time allowed. The qualified fourth flight is of unlimited duration. Flight duration shall be recorded in seconds, with all fractions of a second dropped. An unofficial flight is scored as zero (0).

15.  Safety.  Contestants and proxy fliers are required to wear safety goggles, safety glasses, or some sort of suitable eye protective device during the igniting of the motor and the launching of the model.

**As of the initial drafting of these rules (November 9, 2007) the Rapier L-1 motors that we anticipate that we’ll be using will be rated at 60mN with an 18 second duration. The official motor vendor for this year’s contest is Shorty’s Basement.

On November 12, 2007, it was also decided, after conferring with some contestants, that a maximum unloaded weight limit of 20 grams would also be imposed. This was inserted into the language of Item #1.

The language of Item #7 has also been slightly modified to correct a grammatical error but not to influence a change in rules.

Classic Towline Rules: [A1 follows same rules except for model size - use the old A1 size rules]
1. Model requirements and towing.
A. Builder of the Model Rule applies.
B. Two models allowed per contestant and may be of any design and type of construction.
C. The combined projected surface areas of the wing and horizontal stabilizer shall not exceed a total of 750 sq. in. (48.39 sq. dm.). No restrictions on model weight.

a. Towline maximum length is164 ft (50 m) when under a 4.41 lb (2 kg) tensile load.
b. Wire towline not allowed.
c. A tow reel or winch is permitted but may not be tossed or thrown unless obviously necessary to avoid certain major damage or destruction of a model. If the reel or winch is thrown in such circumstances, an attempt shall be recorded (as per 3.E. below). If thrown with other intent, the timer shall record a zero flight score for the attempt.
d. A pennant with minimum area of 38.75 sq. in. (2.5 sq. dm.) must be attached to the towline below the tow ring.
e. Straight-tow only. Zoom launches are allowed. Circle-tow hook functions and bunting are not allowed.
f. Timer-actuated flight settings are not allowed except for purposes of dethermalizing a model.
g. The rudder(s) may be caused to move from a straight tow position to a glide position upon release of the tow ring from the tow hook.

2. Official flights.
A. All official and unofficial flights are attempts.
B. Six attempts are allowed to make three official flights of 40 seconds or more.
C. Timing of a flight attempt begins with release of the tow ring from the tow hook signaled by a fallen pennant and ends with termination of the flight.
D. To achieve a flight score, an attempt must be launched, towed and released into free flight during the official clock-time of the contest.
E. Flight maximums for the three official flights shall be 2, 3 and 4 minutes attempted in that order.

3. Unofficial flights.
A. Flights of less than 40 seconds are unofficial but may be recorded as official if requested immediately by the contestant.
B. After launch, the glider returns to the ground without release of the towline.
C. Glider part(s) are dropped during launch, tow or flight, including fly-off flights.
D. The instant of towline release from the tow hook cannot be established.
E. While towing, the contestant loses contact and control of the towline and fails to regain control, and/or another person takes control of the towline.

4. Repeat flight attempts.
A. Attempts for official or fly-off flights may be repeated if “B”, “C” or “D” below occur prior to the end of the contest. However, if the glider continues in flight, the resulting flight time may be recorded as official if requested by the contestant.
B. At launch, the glider collides with a person other than the launcher.
C. During tow, the model collides with another model in free flight (but not with a model being towed or with a towline) and towing cannot continue normally.
D. During free flight, the glider collides with another model or another towline.

5. Fly-off flights.
A. If the sum of a contestant’s three official flights equals the maximum allowed (540 seconds), fly-off flight attempts may begin with the maximum time 240 seconds (four minutes) and shall continue at 240 seconds for each attempt until a maximum time is not achieved.
B. One attempt is allowed for each fly-off flight (see also 4.A. above)

6. Weather, terrain and other conditions.
A. Because of actual or predicted adverse weather, terrain, flying conditions or other safety concerns, the Contest Director may modify the flight maximums for official and/or fly-off flights but with appropriate notice and in a manner to protect already recorded flight scores.

  2. Plane: either the 36” or the 44” span version of the Tomboy is allowed. The 44” model is basically the same plane with 2 rib bays added at each wing tip and one rib bay added to each tip of the stab. This is noted on the original plans.
  3. Minor strengthening of the fuselage structure (2-4 diagonals in the forward bays) is allowable. Modifications for DT are allowed.
  4. Power: any diesel up to 1 cc or any COX reed valve engine up to .049 cu in, including the ‘product motor’ (the one left over from the ready to fly CL planes). Any prop may be used.
  5. Fuel: 3 cc*, which is the capacity of a stock Mills P75 [.75 cc / .045 cu in]. Any fuel may be used, but no gasoline may be added to glow fuel for Cox engines.
  6. Flights: All flights are Rise Off Ground [ROG]. There is no max time. Fly as many flights as you wish. Turn in the longest time for Saturday and Sunday by 4:00 pm and the longest for Monday by 3:00 pm.
  7. Timer: The timer must stay within 50’ of the launch point. He may use binoculars.
  8. Entrants are encouraged to be at the CD’s desk at 9 am on Saturday for a group picture.
  9. Scores: Your longest flight over the 3 days is your official score.
  10. Plans:

-A check or PayPal for $6.00 [includes postage] will bring you a full size plan plus copy of the original magazine article. Send to: Al Lidberg, 1030 E. Baseline, Suite 105-1074, Tempe, AZ 85283.  aalmps@aol.com

* 3 cc syringes will be available at the CD’s desk for fueling an empty tank or for use as an ‘eyedropper’ type tank. If the tank on a Cox engine has not been drilled for access to the needle valve, it is requested that you run the engine dry, then refill with 3 cc from a syringe. You should be able to get a quick re-start.

 Speed 400 LMR Special Event***

* Two new RC LMR special events for electric rubber models

Wakefield Class; Any pre WW II, SAM approved Wakefield model. NO SCALING ALLOWED. Motors are limited to the Graupner Speed 300 or 280 Ferrite models.

Unlimited Class: Any pre WW 11, SAM approved rubber powered model. Landing gear is required on "Stick" type models. SCALING IS ALLOWED. Motors are limited to the Graupner Speed 400 4.8, 6, or 7 volt, and the speed 300 and 280 ferrite models.

General rules for both classes: No modifications allowed to the motors other than timing advance. No restrictions on props or gear boxes. Props may fold. Models must ROG unless field or weather conditions dictate otherwise. Battery power is limited to 7 or less ni-cads. Motor run is limited to a single continuous run time of 60 seconds. Three attempts for two official flights. Score will be the sum of the official flights. Maximum flight times will be 5 minutes for Wakefield and 7 minutes for Unlimited.

** Foxacoy:

Plane must be old timer or antique. 788 square inches minimum wing area. Wing loading: 10 ounces/sq ft [This will allow use of airplanes that are legal for C glow LER to be re-engined and eligible to compete.] Engine must be stock Fox .35 stunt or McCoy Red Head FV .35 [McCoys with lightning bolts on the bypass have been ruled to be ineligible]; engines may be chromed to restore compression and fit. 35 seconds engine run, no pressure fuel systems. Four attempts for two official flights. 7 minute max. Score will be the total of the two official flights.

This is to be a low pressure, fun event.  The airplane should still be in sight at the end of 35 seconds or you launched in a heckuva thermal or are cheating!!  Cheaters will be disqualified.  Hopefully there is still honor among the members of SAM.  Newcomers are welcome and will compete on a pretty level playing field as far as machinery goes.  There is no need to spend $400 for an engine and then invest another wad in machine work and tuning.  The airplanes are for the most part easy to fly, and no special skills are needed.  It is a great event for folks to get their feet wet in RC assist.

***S400 LMR Event to be held at the 2008 SWR – ELOY, Az

At the Las Vegas SAM Champs this fall a new R/C event was demonstrated for small electric powered SAM gas models by means of a High Noon mass launch Shootout!  18 flyers turned out for the event and it proved so popular that  SWR officials Al Lidberg & Walt Angus have agreed to also hold it at their contest!

Conceived to utilize the large kit base of 1/2A Texaco model designs, this event converts the Cox powered little beauties to electric power.  To keep it simple only one type motor is allowed – a Graupner Speed 400 with the 6 volt winding.  They are generally available for under $10, and a complete power package can be purchased for about $75 consisting of motor, Electronic Speed Control (ESC) and a small motor power battery.  Chargers would be extra and vary widely in price from $30 to well over $100 depending on features.

A refreshing idea allows the use of NiMh or LiPo batteries as well as the traditional NiCad cells.  Use either 6 NiCad or NiMh cells of any capacity (!) or 2 LiPo cells, again of any capacity.  An 800 to 900 mah cell is the minimum recommended as the motor run will consume 500-600 mah, and if powering the RC controls another 300 mah is desired.  Larger cells may be used as well.  A well built model can actually end up weighing LESS than its COX counterpart because of the absence of a minimum wing loading requirement!

NOTE: For 2008 Ed Hamler may reduce the motor run time to two minutes ( 120 sec) and also may either add a minimum All Up Weight of 16 oz. or a minimum wing loading of 8 oz/ft2.  These adjustments are designed to keep climbs shorter and the models in better sight.

Ed Hamler is the originator of these S400 LMR rules.  He has adapted them from the European 1/2A Electric rules in use on the Continent.  These preliminary rules will also served for the first SAM International Speed 400 LMR Postal team competition hosted by SAM 27 from September 15 through September 30, 2007 (No results published yet). The winning SAM team will host the event's postal competition in 2008 and make rule revisions as appropriate.  Postal Entries should have been received by October 31, 2007 and sent to ehamler@comcast.net <mailto:ehamler@comcast.net>, ehamler@mac.com <mailto:ehamler@mac.com>, or 3379 Crystal Court , Napa , CA 94558 USA

SAM International Speed 400 LMR Event                provisional rules by Ed Hamler

1. Any approved SAM Old Timer gas model airplane. By rule, North American Old Timer designs are limited to December 31, 1942 and older (Section I, C). Other designs are limited to local SAM Chapter design date rules (Article XII, 2) but in no case later than December 31, 1950. Scaling is allowed but there is no minimum weight requirement. The model’s name and design year should appear somewhere on the model.

2. Thrust will be provided by a non-folding, non- metal, propeller of any size driven directly by a Graupner Speed 400, 6 volt permanent magnet ferrite motor without ball bearings. After purchase timing adjustments are allowed.

3. The battery may be six NiCad cells, or six NiMh cells, or two LiIon or LiPoly cells of any capacity with producer's visibly rated voltage not to exceed 7.4 volts.

4. The power to the motor must be radio controlled but may be on/off or ESC.

5. Flights may be hand launched with landing area determined by field rules.

6. The motor may be run only during the first 180 seconds of the flight; any running of the motor afterwards results in a zero score for that flight.

7. The model is the entry in the event. A model may be entered only once in this event but one contestant may enter up to five models of different designs without regard to the builder of the model rule.

8. At local contests where flyoffs are possible, a model's score is the sum of the best two of three 15 minute max flights. For postal contests, three models will constitute a team entry and all three 15 minute max flights are scored.

The Contest Site

The SWR site is known as Webster Field, in honor of Quentin Webster who was a longtime host of the Phoenix Model Airplane Club and supporter of modeling in Arizona. The field is 1/2 mi (N to S) X 1 mi (E to W) and lies in the middle of about 20,000 fairly clear acres providing easy chasing in any direction for 3 to 4 miles. Toltec Road forms the eastern boundary of the field.

Field map

Free flight, both AMA and FAI, will begin each day with the flight line to the north of the parking area.  Because of expected changes in wind direction, at some time each day we will move the flight line to the south side of the parking area. It is therefore important that you confine parking to the designated area.

Use caution when using a chase bike. Things that you need to be aware of  include animal burrows, tire tracks, irrigation ditches, and the possibility of a one-wire electric fence [no guarantees, but the fence is rarely 'live'] around the field. If you unhook the fence to allow passage, re-hook it up - we have a responsibility to the owner of any cattle on the field. Our flying field is located in the middle of formerly irrigated land. The ditches are laid out in a 1/2 mile grid pattern. Permanent bridges are generally located at the corner of each field. We have added dirt filled bridges along the south, west and north sides of our primary field.

The prevailing wind is out of the south at 8:00 AM, usually dies off into a midday lull, and picks up in the afternoon and comes from the north. Early morning temperatures can be in the mid 30s to low 40s, warming to mid 80s in the afternoon. The temperature drops rapidly as the sun sets. Although the field is large, we generally fly Cat. II as people seem to like to enter a lot of events.

Campers can use tents, trailers and motorhomes, but the only facilities we offer are J-Johns.

Last year we had over 115 contestants flying AMA & FAI events. SAM RC OT had approximately 40 contestants.

Hope to see you here! / AL
