The Contest Site

The SWR site is known as Webster Field, in honor of Quentin Webster who was a longtime sponsor of the Phoenix Model Airplane Club and supporter of modeling in Arizona. The field is 1/2 mi (N to S) X 1 mi (E to W) and lies in the middle of about 20,000 fairly clear acres providing easy chasing in any direction for 3 to 4 miles. Toltec Road forms the eastern boundary of the field.

Field map

Free flight, both AMA and FAI, will begin each day with the flight line to the north of the parking area.  Because of expected changes in wind direction, at some time each day we will move the flight line to the south side of the parking area. It is therefore important that you confine parking to the designated area.

Use caution when using a chase bike. Things that you need to be aware of  include animal burrows, tire tracks, irrigation ditches, and the possibility of a one-wire electric fence [no guarantees, but the fence is rarely 'live'] around the field. If you unhook the fence to allow passage, re-hook it up - we have a responsibility to the owner of any cattle on the field.

Our flying field is located in the middle of formerly irrigated land. The ditches are laid out in a 1/2 mile grid pattern. Permanent bridges are generally located at the corner of each field. We have added dirt filled bridges along the south, west and north sides of our primary field, indicated by the Xs on the field map. Many of these crossings are marked by white PVC pipes stuck vertically into the ground.

The prevailing wind is generally out of the south at 8:00 AM, usually dies off into a midday lull, and picks up in the afternoon and comes from the north. Early morning temperatures can be in the mid 30s to low 40s, warming to mid 80s in the afternoon. The temperature drops rapidly as the sun sets. Although the field is large, we generally fly Cat. II as people seem to like to enter a lot of events.

Campers can use tents, trailers and motorhomes, but the only facilities we offer are J-Johns.

Hope to see you here! / AL
